FEATURED STANDOUTS

Butter

Butter is the foundation of this delectable spread, which provides a rich, creamy base that carries the other flavors beautifully. Its inherent richness and melt-in-your-mouth texture are essential for the desired consistency and luxurious feel of the finished product. Unsalted butter works best. It allows for better control over the final saltiness. This is given the inherent salt content of mist paste.

Miso Paste

This fermented soybean paste is the star of the show, contributing a complex savory depth and a distinctive umami punch. Miso comes in various types, each offering a slightly different flavor profile. White miso (shiro miso) is often recommended for its milder notes. It has slightly sweeter notes, making it a good starting point for miso honey butter. The fermentation process of miso paste also introduces beneficial probiotics.

Honey

The natural sweetness of honey perfectly balances the savory and salty notes of the miso. This balance creates a delightful interplay of flavors. Beyond its sweetness, honey also contributes a subtle floral aroma and a slight stickiness that enhances the butter’s texture.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR THE BEST MISO HONEY BUTTER

Use Room Temperature Ingredients

For optimal blending and a smooth, creamy texture, it’s crucial to use room temperature butter and miso paste. Cold ingredients will be difficult to combine evenly, resulting in a lumpy consistency. Allow your butter to soften on the counter for at least 30 minutes before you start.

Selecting Your Miso

The type of miso you choose will significantly impact the flavor profile of your butter. Miso is a fermented soybean paste, and its varieties range from light and sweet to dark and robust.

  • White Miso (Shiro Miso): This is the mildest and sweetest variety, fermented for a shorter period. It’s an excellent choice for a more subtle flavor that won’t overpower delicate dishes.
  • Yellow Miso (Shinshu Miso): Yellow miso is slightly stronger than white miso. It offers a balanced umami flavor with a hint of sweetness. It’s a versatile option suitable for many applications.
  • Red Miso (Aka Miso): Fermented for a longer time, red miso has a robust, salty, and pungent flavor. Use it if you desire a bolder taste that stands out, particularly in heartier dishes.

Consider the intended use of your miso honey butter when selecting your miso. For a more universally appealing condiment, white or yellow miso are good starting points. For this recipe I used yellow miso.

Best Honey for This Recipe

The honey you choose also plays a vital role in the final taste. Aim for a good quality, floral honey that complements the umami of the miso.

  • Clover Honey: A classic, mild-flavored honey that won’t compete with the miso.
  • Wildflower Honey: Often has a more complex flavor profile depending on the regional flora, which can add interesting nuances.

Avoid strongly flavored or dark honeys like buckwheat, as they will overwhelm the other ingredients.

How to Store Miso Honey Butter

Proper storage is key to extending the shelf life of your miso honey butter.

Store the butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks. The cold will solidify the butter, so you may need to let it soften slightly at room temperature before use.

For longer storage, you can freeze miso honey butter for up to 3 months. Portion it into smaller amounts. You could use an ice cube tray. Then transfer the frozen cubes to a freezer-safe bag or container. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for a quicker thaw.

What Can I Use Miso Honey Butter On?

The possibilities are endless! Miso honey butter adds a delightful touch to both savory and sweet dishes. Spread on toast, bagels, muffins. Toss with roasted vegetables, grilled meats, seafood. Excellent on corn on the cob, baked potatoes. Mix into noodles, rice. Use in glazes, sauces, or as a sandwich spread.
