Crispy chicken wings marinated in 7Up and beer. They are then fried with cayenne and seasoned salt. This makes them a sweet, tangy, and spicy game-day favorite.

Feature Standouts

7UP

This unexpected ingredient is a game-changer! The sweet citrus notes of 7UP infuse the chicken with a unique, tangy flavor. They also act as a tenderizer. This ensures every bite is incredibly juicy. The carbonation also contributes to a lighter, airier batter.

Beer

Beyond adding depth of flavor, the carbonation in beer creates a remarkably light and airy batter. It significantly contributes to the wings’ desirable crispy texture.

Chicken Wings

The star of the show! These juicy, crispy bites are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, perfect for any gathering or as a satisfying snack.

Cayenne

For those who crave a little heat, a touch of cayenne pepper delivers a delightful spicy kick. It balances the sweetness of the 7UP. It adds an exciting dimension to the flavor profile.

Seasoned Salt

A carefully crafted blend of savory seasonings. This element ensures a well-rounded and balanced taste. It enhances the natural flavors of the chicken and other ingredients.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR THE BEST SOUTHERN FRIED 7UP WINGS

Marinate for Maximum Tenderness

To make the wings most tender, allow them to marinate in the 7UP and beer mixture. Let them soak for at least one hour. For an even more profound infusion of flavor, consider marinating overnight.

Cold Beer for Crispier Batter

The secret to a truly crispy batter lies in using cold beer. The temperature difference between the cold beer and the hot oil helps create a more delicate and shatteringly crisp coating.

Double-Fry for Extra Crunch

For an unparalleled crunch, employ the double-frying technique. Fry the wings once at a lower temperature to cook them through. Then, increase the heat and fry them a second time for that irresistible golden-brown crispness.

Toss Immediately with Extra Seasoning

To ensure every wing is bursting with flavor, toss them immediately after frying in an additional sprinkle of seasoned salt. This allows the seasoning to adhere perfectly to the hot, crispy surface.

7Up Fried Wings

Sweet, tangy, and spicy, these crispy chicken wings are a game-day favorite. Marinated in 7Up and beer, they’re fried to perfection with a kick of cayenne and seasoned salt.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 40 minutes
Total Time 50 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 can 7UP
  • 1 12 oz beer
  • For the Chicken:
  • 2 lbs chicken wings segmented
  • 2 Tbsp seasoned salt
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp cayenne pepper
  • For the Breading:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp seasoned salt
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp black pepper
  • For Frying:
  • 6 cups vegetable oil

Method

  1. Marinate the Chicken: In a large bowl, combine the 7UP and beer. Add the segmented chicken wings and ensure they are fully submerged. Marinate for a minimum of 3 hours, or preferably overnight, in the refrigerator.
  2. Prepare the Chicken: Once ready to cook, remove the chicken wings from the marinade, discarding the liquid. Pat the wings dry with paper towels.
  3. Season the Chicken: In a separate bowl, toss the marinated chicken wings with the seasoned salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until evenly coated.
  4. Prepare the Breading: In a shallow dish or a large resealable bag, combine the all-purpose flour, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and black pepper for the breading.
  5. Bread the Chicken: Dredge each seasoned chicken wing in the flour mixture, ensuring it is fully coated. Shake off any excess breading.
  6. Heat the Oil: In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 365°F (185°C). Use a thermometer to ensure accurate temperature.
  7. Fry the Chicken: Carefully add the breaded chicken wings to the hot oil in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry until the chicken is golden brown, cooked through, and floats to the surface (approximately 8-10 minutes per batch).
  8. Drain and Season: Remove the fried chicken wings with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack set over paper towels to drain excess oil. Immediately sprinkle with a pinch of salt while hot.
  9. Serve: Serve hot and enjoy!
