Crusty baquette stuffed with spicy hot mustard beef layered with crispy cucumbers, carrots and jalapenos topped with torn mint and cilantro.
WHAT’S GOING ON HERE:
Hot Mustard Beef: Hot mustard beef is simply chuck roast rubbed with hot mustard, garlic, peppers and cinnamon that then roasted tilled tender.
Cucumbers; Cucumbers are a banh mi staple. The cucumbers offer a crisp crunch. They also slightly relieve your mouth of some of the heat from the meat and jalapenos.
Carrots: Carrots add a nice earthiness that stands up next to the roasted meat and vegetables. for a softer grated carrot use a box grater.
Jalapenos: Seeds in or out is all about preference. The seeds and ribs are the root of the heat. Leave them in if you like a spicier sandwich. Take them out if you like it a little tamer. Either way don’t skip the fresh jalapenos
Herbs: Fresh herbs are what really tie in the banh mi together so use your favorites. typically you’ll see an assortment of basil, cilantro and mint. use any combination you like.
Soy: Drizzle a little soy sauce over the finish sandwich to really wake it up. the salty soy help tie everything together once the sandwich is ready to eat.
TIPS & TRICKS FOR THE BEST HOT MUSTARD BEEF BANH MI:
Let the meat cool: the best way to handle this sandwich is with everything cooled. the meat is easier to handle, the bread is cooled to the touch and the toppings are ready for building.
Do it ahead: cut the vegetables and store them to the side so the sandwiches can always be ready for building. cut a little extra for a nice snack. having everything ready makes for easier sandwich assembling in the future.
Crusty Bread: the crustier the bread the better. i generally like to warm my bread in the oven and let it cool completely before handling. the juicy meat and vegetables rehydrate the bread.
Mayo: kewpie mayo is a creamier and yolkier mayo, its the perfect spread for this sandwich. if you don’t have kewpie use your favorite on hand.
Herbs: typically you’ll see mint, basil and cilantro on a banh mi use any combination for the max flavor.
